Church Chair Dictionary

A ganging device is a piece of hardware attached to the right and left sides of each church chair. This device creates an interlocking “handshake” that ties the chairs together into rows.  Most local fire codes will require that chairs in an auditorium setting (i.e. in rows like a church sanctuary) be either interlocked together or bolted to the floor.  Worship Chairs® suggests checking with your local fire codes to see if there are any specific requirements for your new chairs.

Stacking buttons are small plastic buttons on the back of each chair leg that prevents chairs from hanging on each other when stacked. Additionally, stacking buttons prevent other chairs from scratching each other. Typically there is two stacking buttons in the rear side of the church chair (inside) while there it typically one in the front legs of each chair for a total of 6 buttons.

Actually there is a wide range of sizes from 16 inch to 22-inch wide chairs. The two most common sizes are 18.5” and 22” chairs.  Your will normally see the 16-19” chairs in places where you dine, in meeting halls, wedding receptions, classrooms, conference rooms and the like. Your 20-22” chairs are mostly found in church sanctuaries, including larger meeting halls, hallways, auditoriums, civic centers and other public facilities.  Most chairs will be classified into the two major categories, hence the 18.5” and 21” categories.

OSHA classifies a “waterfall” design to be a chair of any design to have rounded and padded edges. Not all chairs have this. According to OSHA, the waterfall design helps promote good posture and blood circulation when being seated. Most Chairs found on Worship Chairs ® will have the waterfall front edge. If you are not sure, then just ask us.

We actually get this question very frequently. Basically in the church chair industry, a bookrack is a piece of hardware found underneath the chair. Made normally of metal, its either hanging, welded or screwed into the chair and the depth can range from 2” to 6” deep or more. Bookracks are designed to hold items such as bibles, hymnals, tissue boxes, documents and more. Most are designed as rear access only – meaning you reach to the chair in front of you to use the bookrack.

It’s a piece of metal that is attached near the bookrack and found to be just large enough to hold the plastic (sometimes glass) communion cup. Cups are typically 1 ounce in size.  Cup holders can be different shapes but the most typical found on church chairs is a U shape or a circle.

Polyolefin, often called Olefin fabric is a man made material that is actually found in several items such as wallpaper, various ropes, car interiors, carpet and of course chairs of a commercial grade like church chairs. Olefin is very durable and strong. It is resistant to sunlight, mildew and staining. Olefin fabrics will also not whiten when you bleach them. This is because the fiber color is embedded to the fabric during the manufacturing process. Other fibers like cotton and polyester are naturally white then dyed afterwards.  Olefin fabrics of any caliber will normally outlast fabrics of less quality like polyester for example.

T-Nut also known as a blind nut is designed to fasten wood to metal or other surfaces to leave a flush, flat and tight connection. T-Nuts have sharp points that dig into the wood and a screw will go through it, binding it together.
